A New Look for a New Millennium

10-Jan-2001

A New Look for a New Millennium is the promise of the new Axis Computing website. Designed to showcase the company's flagship AEGIS product line, the site promises all the customer contact support tools, in one easy-to-navigate place.

The entire site is implemented using the AEGIS and AEGIS/cgi development environment products, showing just how easy they are to use. The total body of AEGIS code used to produce all the site automation (including the entire technical support automation system, user login, FAQ lists, news release browser, trial download manager, trial registration database and the site map) measures less than 1700 lines!

Most commercial websites are developed using an off-line web development tool, such as Microsoft FrontPage or a word-processing application, or in many cases, hand-writing HTML code. The pages are generated, then loaded onto a web server, where they can be accessed by customers browsing the site. However, the page content is static - fixed pages that never change, regardless of the customer. A bewildering array of navigation choices must be provided to suit everyone.

The new Axis Computing site, using AEGIS technology, is a fresh, new face. Every access to the site invokes an AEGIS script, which generates exactly the right content, on-the-fly, in real time. The content is tailored to suit the user. The menu bar includes the right choices, at the right level, without resorting to JavaScript or other tricks which may not be supported by the user's browser. The output is pure, standard HTML. With all the trimmings you'd expect from a modern website.

Many aspects of the website draw data directly from SQL tables. The FAQ (frequently asked questions) categories all load the questions and answers from a table. So does the What's New routine, which produced the page you are reading right now! The menu bar, top level menu, and text links at the bottom are all drawn from an SQL table which lists every menu choice, handles secured access for registered customers, and even generates the site map page!

Why bother? Just to showcase the power, grace and style of the AEGIS Development System - simply the most convenient e-commerce implementation toolkit on the Internet today!
